Dental pain can become unbearable within a few hours. At DENTOBEL, slots are kept free every day for emergencies. Call us on 0473 71 71 71 as soon as the problem starts and we will tell you what time to come to Rue Josaphat 45 in Schaerbeek.

Situations we treat as emergencies
Severe toothache
strong, throbbing pain, often worse at night or with hot and cold.
Dental abscess
an infection causing pain, swelling of the gum or cheek, and sometimes fever.
Broken or cracked tooth
after a fall, a knock or biting into something hard.
Displaced or knocked-out tooth
following a knock, in children and adults alike.
Crown, bridge or filling that has come loose
the exposed tooth may become sensitive.
Bleeding or pain after treatment
that is not improving.
What to do while waiting for your appointment
- Take a painkiller you normally use, following the instructions on the leaflet.
- If there is swelling, apply something cold to the outside of the cheek. Never apply heat.
- Avoid chewing on the painful side and avoid very hot or very cold food.
- If a tooth is broken, keep the fragment and bring it to the practice.
- If an adult tooth has been knocked out, hold it by the crown without touching the root, keep it in milk and come in as quickly as possible: every minute counts.

What happens during an emergency appointment?
The dentist examines you and takes an X-ray if necessary to identify the cause of the problem. Their priority is to relieve you the same day: draining an abscess, placing a dressing, protecting a broken tooth or starting treatment. If longer treatment is needed, they explain the next steps and plan the appointments with you, with an estimate if required.
When the pain comes from the nerve of the tooth or from an abscess, the dentist can start root canal treatment during the emergency appointment: this is often what brings the fastest relief, while saving the tooth.
When should you go straight to hospital?
If the swelling spreads quickly towards the eye or neck, if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, or if you have a high fever, go immediately to the emergency department of the nearest hospital or call 112.
Emergencies outside opening hours
The practice sees emergencies Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 18:00. In the evening, at weekends and on public holidays, contact the Brussels out-of-hours dental service.
Preventing tomorrow's emergencies
Many dental emergencies start with a small problem that went unnoticed. A regular check-up makes it possible to treat decay or an infection before it becomes painful. Use your visit to have your whole mouth checked.
